Vocational Education in Finland (Ammattikoulu) for Immigrants

Finnish vocational education (ammatillinen koulutus) is a practical, employment-focused training system. For immigrants who want faster access to the job market without a long university program, a vocational qualification is often the ideal route. Employers across Finland actively seek graduates with these credentials.

What Is Vocational Education?

Finnish vocational qualifications can be completed in 1-3 years depending on prior experience and the specific qualification. They combine theory with mandatory workplace training (tyossaoppiminen), meaning you spend a significant portion of study time working in the actual industry. Competence-based assessment is available, meaning documented prior work experience can shorten the study period significantly.

Common Vocational Paths for Immigrants

  • Social and healthcare (lahihoitaja โ€” practical nurse) โ€” Very high demand across Finland. Finnish language B1-B2 typically required for patient care roles.
  • Construction (rakennusala) โ€” Multiple specializations. Safety Card required before working on site.
  • Catering and hospitality โ€” Kitchen, service, and hotel roles. Hygiene Passport required for food handling work.
  • ICT and technical support โ€” Network administration, hardware support, and software basics.
  • Logistics and transport โ€” Driver qualifications and warehouse operations.

Language Requirements

Most vocational programs in Finland are taught in Finnish. English-language programs exist at some institutions but are less common than at university level. A minimum of A2-B1 Finnish is typically required for Finnish-language program admission. TE-palvelut integration courses are designed specifically to bring immigrants to the Finnish level needed for vocational education entry.

Cost and Funding

Vocational education is free for EU and EEA citizens. Non-EU residents with a valid residence permit may also access free vocational education โ€” verify eligibility directly with the provider.

If you are already working in construction, cleaning, catering, or care work, a vocational qualification formally recognises your experience and significantly improves your earnings and long-term job security in Finland.
