LUT University in Lappeenranta is one of Finland most international campuses — about 35% of students are from outside Finland. If you are starting here, this is what nobody will tell you in the brochure.
The Arrival
If you are arriving in autumn (August-September), Lappeenranta is green and pleasant. If you are arriving in January for the spring semester, prepare yourself: it will be dark, cold, and potentially -15 degrees. Buy proper winter clothing before you arrive or immediately from Prisma or Citymarket.
Academic Culture
Finnish university culture is quiet, independent, and direct. Professors are addressed by first name. Deadlines are real — extensions are rarely given. Join or form a study group in your first week.
Housing
Apply to SOAS (student housing) before you arrive. Shared flats in SOAS buildings are affordable (290-400 euros per month including utilities) and are the best place to meet other international students.
Part-Time Work
Working while studying is common and financially important. University research assistant roles, local cafes and restaurants, and remote freelancing are all realistic options. Working up to 25 hours per week is typically allowed on a student permit.
The Finnish winter (November-March) can be psychologically hard. Exercise regularly, get a daylight lamp, stay socially connected. It passes.
