Starting a Business in Finland as an Immigrant — Sole Trader to Oy

Finland is consistently ranked among the best countries in the world for starting a business. The registration process is digital, fast, and available in English. As an immigrant, you have the same right to start a business in Finland as any Finnish citizen — provided you hold a valid residence permit or EU right of residence.

Business Structures in Finland

Toiminimi (Sole Trader)

The simplest structure. You operate as yourself — no separate legal entity. Profits are taxed as personal income. Ideal for freelancers, consultants, and small service businesses. Registration cost: 60 euros at ytj.fi.

Osakeyhtiö (Oy — Limited Liability Company)

The most common structure for anything beyond solo freelancing. Shareholders are not personally liable for company debts. Minimum share capital: 1 euro (reduced from 2,500 euros in 2019). Registration cost: approximately 380 euros electronically at ytj.fi. Processing takes 1-3 working days.

Registration Process

All business registration goes through the Business Information System at ytj.fi. The portal is in Finnish or Swedish but English-language guidance is available at businessfinland.fi. You need your henkilotunnus and a Finnish bank account to complete registration.

VAT Registration

VAT registration (arvonlisaverovelvollisuus) is mandatory when annual turnover exceeds 15,000 euros. Register through ytj.fi at the same time as company registration to keep the process simple.

Government Support for New Entrepreneurs

  • Business Finland (businessfinland.fi) — Grants, loans, and export support for growth businesses.
  • Uusyrityskeskus (newco.fi) — Free expert advice for new business founders in major cities. Available in English.
  • TE-palvelut startup grant (starttiraha) — Approximately 32 euros per day for up to 12 months, available to unemployed people starting a viable business.

The startup grant (starttiraha) from TE-palvelut is one of the most underused resources for immigrant entrepreneurs. Apply before registering your business — you cannot apply retroactively after registration.
